Due to the Olympic scheduling our 2010 competition has been postponed until 2011. The competition will involve an entry level competition as well as an apprentice level competition. Both will be tested on a piping project, built from a drawing, to exacting measurements. The projects difficulty will vary depending on which competition you have entered. All of the installation will be installed to an accuracy of plus or minus 2 millimetres for full marks, 3 to 4 millimetres will earn half marks and anything more than 4 millimetres will receive zero marks.
The dates for the competition have yet to be determined, please check back in the fall. The location will again be in the Piping Trades building (NE-6) on the Burnaby Campus. The following pdf files are for those interested in participating in the upcoming Skills Competition:
The below Electronic Application Form will notify the skills competition committee of your intention to compete in this years competition. An official competitors application form must be submitted to either Dale Pfaff or Richard Yoo at your earliest convenience.
For the past five years the staff and students from the Piping Department have been hosting a competition aimed at testing the piping skills of their Foundation and Apprenticeship students. This year’s competition was held from April 30 to May 2 and the results exceeded all expectations.
This year’s project brought a new design configuration for both contestant levels with the projects being built from a drawing, to exact measurements. The projects were designed with the skill level of the students in mind with the apprenticeship project being more difficult than the foundation project. The projects are graded by lower mainland plumbing inspector’s which provides a realistic value to the projects.
Our two first place finishers were: on the apprenticeship side, second year apprentice David Dudka of Dan-Jen Mechanical Ltd. and in the Foundation competition the winner was Ryan Forster.
Both competitions top three prize winners received generous prizes donated by Milwaukee Electric Tool Company, Con-Cur Marketing (Watts Canada) and BCIT Piping department. Both of the first place winners received free tuition for their next year’s schooling. In addition to the donated prizes Ryan also received a job opportunity from Allstar Mechanical Ltd. upon completion of his Foundation program.
Special thanks go out to the Judging Committee, faculty and staff and special thanks go to our current group of Foundation student who put extra time in to make things happen.

As with past years selecting first, second and third place finishers in the two categories were not an easy task. Our team of judges had to pay close attention to the tale of the tape.
Our two first place finishers were: on the apprentice side, second year’er Darin Sinal of Teck Cominco and on the ELTT side, the winner was Iulian Paunesca. Placing second were Ryan Comeau and Nick Mollica and rounding off third place was Mark Miller and John Olson. Both competitions top three prize winners received generous prizes donated by Watts Canada, Apollo Valves and Milwaukee Tools. And both Darin and Iulian won their next year tuition to BCIT (donated by the department). Special thanks go out to the Judging Committee, faculty and staff and special thanks go to our current bunch of ELTT student who put extra time in to make things happen. Pictures can be seen on the Skills Competition page.

As the 2007 BCIT Piping Skills Competition approached the judging stage it was apparent that the judges would be having a difficult time picking a definite winner. In the entry level competition, first place and second place were separated by a mere 70 points out of 900 possible points. The guest judges were all various municipal plumbing inspectors all of whom were very impressed at the quality of workmanship displayed by the competitors who have yet to enter into an official apprenticeship. Some of these ELTT competitors had only learned to perform some of the required skill sets a mere week prior to the competition date. In the end, Kyle Morin an ACCESS sponsored entry level competitor was named the 2007 ELTT competition winner.
The apprenticeship competition was as equally difficult to crown a winner. The competitors representing various plumbing contractors some as far away as Vancouver Island performed like seasoned journeymen. At the end of the two day “build off” the winner of the 2007 BCIT Skills apprenticeship level competition was Ryan Comeau, a second year plumbing apprentice from local plumbing and heating contractor, Reid Brothers. Ryan and his co competitors really made the judging difficult and it came down to minute details in picking the best project.
We would like to acknowledge the following for their valuable contributions to this years Piping Department Skills Competition.
