So how do you choose? We've tried to help you by listing some of the common career choices available and programs that will help you on each particular career path.

Programmer or software developer

As a programmer or software developer, you spend some of your time at a computer workstation, but almost as much of your time with clients and colleagues. You use people skills, creativity and innovative thinking to develop software and programs that help business succeed. You’re at the centre of today’s markets, the movement of goods and services, banking systems, health care, and the entertainment industry.

Embedded systems developer

Today, even shoes have tiny computers embedded in them. As an embedded systems developer, you will build software for special-purpose computer systems that are completely encapsulated by the devices they control. Whether working as part of a multi-disciplinary team or as an individual contributor, to be successful in this career you need strong analytic, diagnostic and problem solving skills and the ability to generate ideas and solutions.

Network administrator

A network administrator keeps the lines of computer communication open. You will be maintaining multi-user computer systems and the networking infrastructure that interconnects them. Typical duties including installing and configuring networked systems, setting up user accounts, installing system-wide software, ensuring network security and allocating mass storage space. Working well with a team and strong problem-solving skills are important in this field.

Database administrators store, maintain and retrieve large amounts of data in many different industries including education, the government, telecommunications and human resources. Your analytical and troubleshooting skills will come in handy as you develop, implement, configure, administer, support, and back-up relational database management systems.

A systems analyst is responsible for analyzing, planning and designing software systems to meet an organization's business requirements. You will be responsible for interfacing with all stakeholders to provide feasible software solutions to organizational needs. As part of your career, you will make use of software development tools and techniques to produce specifications and documents at all stages of the software development cycle.

Software quality assurance engineer

Ensuring that software works properly on your computer is the job of quality assurance engineers. You will define and implement quality assurance practices and procedures as well as test, evaluate and validate IT initiatives. You will be responsible for analyzing discrepancies in service or performance and making recommendations for product or service updates. You also develop, publish and implement test plans and test automation.

Technical support liaison

Do you enjoy helping people solve computer problems? As a technical support liaison, you will respond to telephone calls, email and personnel requests for technical support. Working with clients, customers and/or co-workers, you will use your strong interpersonal and communication skills to identify, research and resolve technical problems. Part of this process includes documenting, tracking and monitoring problems to ensure a timely resolution. You will be responsible for escalating urgent problems requiring more in-depth knowledge to appropriate internal resources.
