Manager, Internet Engineering Lab, British Columbia Institute of Technology

Eric J. Byres is a Professional Engineer and research manager of BCIT's Internet Engineering Lab (IEL). As a team leader, Eric oversees projects related to Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and security research, industrial networking research and the general operation of the Internet Engineering Lab. He is also a faculty member in BCIT's School of Electrical and Electronic Technology.

For the past 14 years he has specialized in data communications systems in industrial environments, focusing on industrial Ethernet research and network security design. Eric is a working group chair of the ISA SP-99 Security Committee, an standards group focusing on the development of international framework for the protection of industrial facilities from cyber attack. He is on the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) PCSRF committee developing industrial network security standards and was selected to be the Chair of the ISA Industrial Ethernet Conference in 2000 and 2001 and the ISA Industrial Security Conference in 2003. He holds the Advanced Systems Institute (ASI) fellowship for industrial network security research until 2005. In 1999, he was the winner of the Best Paper Award at the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Pulp and Paper Industrial Applications Conference and in September 2000 he won the IEEE Outstanding Industry Applications Article award for his paper on network security.

Eric appears frequently as a keynote speaker at industry conferences worldwide (Melbourne, London, Lima and Houston) and is widely used as a expert resource to the press.
