Requirements & Equivalencies

Ensure your enrolment goes as smoothly as possible—check that you meet BCIT’s entrance requirements or course prerequisites. Our requirements vary depending on the type of program or course you’ve chosen:

• Full-time programs
• Part-time program declaration
• Part-time course registration
• Apprenticeship training

The following is a list of BC high school equivalencies that may satisfy the entrance requirements for BCIT programs. Search our online program catalogue to check your program's specific requirements.

Note: All learning options at BCIT have minimum English language proficiency requirements.  Learn more about upgrading and English proficiency.

Acceptable Equivalencies
High school graduation	General Educational Development (GED) or British Columbia Adult Graduation Diploma (BCAGD) High school graduation is a preferred requirement for admission to most programs and BCIT strongly recommends high school graduation for career success. Applicants who do not possess high school graduation will be considered for admission if they meet or exceed program entrance requirements. Note: High school graduation is a mandatory requirement for Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering .
English 12	English 12 or Technical and Professional Communications 12
English 11	English 11 or Technical and Professional Communications 11
Communications 12	English 12 or Technical and Professional Communications 12 or Communications 12
Math 12	Principles of Mathematics 12 or Applications of Mathematics 12 or New BC high school streams: Pre-calculus 12 or Foundations of Mathematics 12 or Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics 12
Math 11	Principles of Mathematics 11 or Applications of Mathematics 11 or New BC high school streams: Pre-calculus 11 or Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics 11
Any Math at the Grade 10 or 11 Level	Principles of Mathematics or Applications of Mathematics or Essentials of Mathematics or Intro to Mathematics or Trades Mathematics or Consumer Mathematics or Mathematics 10/11A or New BC high school streams: Pre-calculus or Foundations of Mathematics or Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics.  Note:  Accounting is not acceptable.
Physics 12	Physics 12
Physics 11	Physics 11 or Applications of Physics 11 and Applications of Physics 12

BC post-secondary courses

Find out if your completed course may be an acceptable equivalent. Use BCIT’s online Transfer Guide, or contact a program advisor .

Out-of-province or out-of-country courses

If you need to have courses assessed for entrance requirement fulfillment, submit an official copy of your educational transcripts as early as possible. Transcripts that are not in English must be officially translated. Graduation from an out-of-country secondary school may meet the high school graduation requirement with the equivalent of 12 years of study. Your individual courses will need to be assessed to determine equivalent grade level.

If you have questions after reviewing the entrance requirements for your chosen program, program advisors are here to help. Program advisors can answer most questions about BCIT programs, and if they can't answer a question, they'll find someone who can.

Program advisors are not career counselors. They do not evaluate educational documents for admission, transfer credit or credential equivalencies.

Upgrading

If you don’t meet the specified entrance requirements for the program to which you’re applying, BCIT provides options for upgrading and assessment testing. Some programs will still consider your application while you’re in the process of upgrading. Find out what to submit with your application if you are currently upgrading.

Some programs have specific deadline dates for all entrance requirements to be met. Check the entrance requirements for your program to see if a deadline has been set.
